Abstract

Listening is an essential part of English as a foreign language apart from writing, reading, and speaking. In teaching and learning activities, there are two possibilities. First, students learn what they have to learn. Second, students only attend the lesson, but they do not learn anything. Based on limited observations, students in a junior high school in Tasikmalaya were less interested in learning English, primarily listening. They thought that English was difficult and tedious. Watching movies with subtitles in the target language (English) is beneficial in language learning, especially for listening activities. The present study was conducted to observe teaching English listening using the English-captioned short movie as the media and to find out the students' challenges when learning English listening with the English-captioned short movie. Qualitative research with a case study approach was chosen in this study. The participant of this study was an English teacher and 16 students of the ninth grade in SMPN 1 Rajapolah. The data were collected by observation, distributed the questionnaire and interview. This study showed that the teacher did the steps to teach English listening: pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening activities. Besides, there were some challenges faced by the students when learning English listening with an English-captioned short movie, such as from the listener factor (lack of vocabulary, concentration, physical setting), from the speaker factor (the speed of speech of the speaker, unfamiliar accent, and unclear voice or the quality of recorded material) and environmental noise, such as people talking and walking outside the class. However, using an English-captioned short movie as the media in learning English listening is beneficial. It makes students easier to comprehend the content and increase their listening ability.
