Abstract

Representative illocutionary acts are speech acts that carry truth values from the real conditions of the meaning of the utterances spoken or in written conversations. It carries a 'true' or 'false' value about how to assert or conclude something. This study aims to find out what kinds and functions of the representative illocutionary acts are found on President Biden's Twitter account. This research only focuses on the utterances made by President Biden from February to July 2021 with the theme of the Covid-19 discussion. This research is based on Searle's theory which states that a representative illocutionary act is an utterance that the speaker believes to be true or false based on an event experienced. The object used in this research is utterances in the form of tweets from President Biden. Furthermore, the utterances are categorized and analyzed according to the kinds of representative illocutionary acts and their functions. The research method used in this study is the qualitative method. The results of this research are the findings of 68 data from five kinds of representative illocutionary acts, namely: stating (16), reporting (12), concluding (10), suggesting (20), complaining (10), the most dominant used by President Biden is the kind of representative illocutionary act of suggesting. The writer also finds 68 data from eights functions of the representative illocutionary act, there are; states (19), explains (12), asserts (9), claims (24), describes (4), the most dominant used by President Biden is the function of the representative illocutionary act of claim.
