Abstract

ENGLISH : Overlap is one of turn taking violations in a conversation. It happens when the next speaker takes the turn while the current speaker is still talking which violates the current speaker’s right in making turn. However, it doesn’t mean overlap always be problematic because based on its types and reasons, it also can be unproblematic. In several situations especially a formal conversation such as interview, it still becomes a rife phenomenon where many speakers aren’t aware yet about overlap types and reasons. Hence, they haven’t been able to use overlap appropriately between the one that interferes conversation and not. Therefore, the aims of this research are: (1) to categorize what types of overlap are constructed, and (2) to analyze what are the reasons of overlap occurrence in Golden Globe Awards Interviews 2020 by The Hollywood Reporter. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative with documentation as data collection technique. The main theory of overlap types is based on Schegloff (2000) and overlap reasons is based on Wardhaugh (1985). Based on the analysis results of 54 data in the conversation of Golden Globe Awards Interviews 2020, the researcher found overlaps types that divided into non-competitive overlaps which consist of terminal overlap, continuers, conditional access to the turn, choral and competitive overlaps which consist of high pitch and increased loudness, completion, delayed completion. Then, those constructed overlap types occur because of several reasons namely breaking up, seeking clarification, disagreeing, completing, agreeing, pauses, solidarity/closeness, and enthusiasm and interest. This research is expected to help people in using correct overlap and avoiding overlap that can cause disruption in a celebrity interview. INDONESIA : Tumpang tindih merupakan salah satu pelanggaran pengambilan giliran berbicara dalam sebuah percakapan. Hal tersebut terjadi ketika pembicara berikutnya memulai gilirannya ketika pembicara sebelumnya masih berbicara dimana itu melanggar hak pembicara sebelumnya dalam melakukan gilirannya. Namun, bukan berarti tumpang tindih selalu bermasalah, karena berdasarkan tipe dan penyebabnya, tumpang tindih bisa juga tidak bermasalah. Pada beberapa situasi terutama dalam percakapan formal seperti wawancara, hal ini masih menjadi fenomena yang marak terjadi dimana banyak pembicara yang belum mengetahui tipe dan penyebab tumpang tindih. Oleh karenanya, mereka belum mampu untuk menggunakan tumpang tindih yang tepat antara yang mengganggu percakapan dan tidak. Jadi, tujuan penelitian ini adalah: (1) untuk mengkategorikan tipe-tipe tumpang tindih yang terbangun, dan (2) untuk menganalisis penyebab terjadinya tumpang tindih dalam wawancara penghargaan Golden Globe 2020 oleh The Hollywood Reporter. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa studi dokumen. Teori utama untuk tipe tumpang tindih didasarkan pada teori Schegloff (2000) dan penyebab tumpang tindih didasarkan pada teori Wardhaugh (1985). Berdasarkan hasil analisis dari 54 data pada percakapan di dalam wawancara penghargaan Golden Globe 2020, peneliti menemukan tipe-tipe tumpang tindih yang terbagi menjadi non-competitive overlaps yang terdiri dari terminal overlap, continuers, conditional access to the turn, choral dan competitive overlaps yang terdiri dari high pitch and increased loudness, completion, delayed completion. Kemudian, tipe-tipe tumpang tindih yang terbangun tersebut terjadi karena beberapa alasan yaitu breaking up, seeking clarification, disagreeing, completing, agreeing, pauses, solidarity/closeness dan enthusiasm and interest. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat membantu orang-orang dalam menggunakan tumpang tindih yang benar dan menghindari tumpang tindih yang dapat menyebabkan gangguan dalam sebuah wawancara selebriti.
