Abstract

ENGLISH : This thesis discusses the representation of women slaves in Colson Whitehead's novel The Underground Railroad which was published in 2016. The focus of this research is to analyze the characters who live in the slavery era. The characters are Cora, Mabel, Ajarry as black slave girls and people in South America and North America. To analyze the discourse of slavery, the researcher uses Stuart Hall's representation theory, race theory and mimetic approach. This study uses qualitative data. The research data is divided into two types, namely primary data and secondary data. Primary data was taken from dialogue and narration from Colson Whitehead's novel The Underground Railroad, while secondary data was taken from journals, books, articles and previous studies that had similar topics or objects related to the topic of discussion. The researcher analyzed the textual analysis of women slavery in the novel The Underground Railroad from the narration and dialogue of the characters. The researcher uses Stuart Hall's representation theory, uses race theory and a mimetic approach. The theory of representation is used to dismantle the discourse of women's slavery in seeing the narrative signs in the novel The Underground Railroad. Meanwhile, race theory is used to better understand forms of discrimination based on race and mimetic approach to better understand the context of discrimination. The results of this study, the researchers found that Cora as the main character of the women slave managed to represent the women slavery she experienced, the representation began when she was still in a cotton plantation where she was enslaved until finally she managed to escape and be free from the cruel slavery system that was carried out by the white race.
