Abstract

Research on the development of main character based on setting in movie is appropriate to be analysed since it involves the analysis of narrative elements and cinematic elements simultaneously. Settings in a movie are presented differently from settings in other narrative works. Settings generally did not do self-formed in a movie, but cinematic elements such as shot camera techniques, camera movement, composition, and dominancy of color can give a clear visual impact. The cinematic elements also have a role in illustrating the development of the character through setting. This study tries to explain the role of setting in the development of the main character in The King’s Speech (2010) movie. The writer used theories proposed by Boggs (2008) and Nurgiyantoro (2002). The methodology of this research was descriptive qualitative with case study approach. The King’s Speech (2010) by Tom Hooper was chosen as the object of study since it brings up iconic characters in various clear settings. As a result, the setting influences the development of the main character in a movie. Furthermore, cinematic elements have a role in illustrating the setting and state of a character in every stage of its development. Penelitian terkait pengembangan tokoh utama yang ditinjau dari setting dalam sebuah film menarik untuk dikaji karena melibatkan analisis unsur naratif dan unsur sinematik secara bersamaan. Setting secara umum tidak terbentuk begitu saja dalam film namun elemen sinematik seperti teknik pengambilan gambar, pergerakan kamera, komposisi hingga dominansi warna mampu memberi dampak visual yang jelas. Sinematik elemen juga berperan mengilustrasikan perkembangan tokoh lewat setting. Penelitian ini mencoba menjelaskan bagaimana tokoh utama terbentuk lewat indikasi frekuensi kemunculan, narasi dan 3 aspek dimensi lalu ditinjau perkembangannya berdasar pada setting dalam film The King’s Speech (2010). Pada skripsi ini peneliti menggunakan beberapa teori yang dikemukakan oleh Boggs (2008) dan Nurgiyantoro (2002). Metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus digunakan untuk menggambarkan penelitian. Film The King’s Speech (2010) dipilih sebagai objek penelitian karena menghadirkan tokoh utama yang ikonis dengan setting beragam yang cukup jelas penggambarannya. Hasilnya, peneliti menemukan bahwa setting memiliki andil dalam memperjelas perkembangan tokoh utama dalam film. Selanjutnya bahasa sinematik memiliki peran mengilustrasikan setting serta keadaan tokoh pada setiap jenjang perkembangannya.
