Abstract

Hero cycle is a term referring to Joseph Campbell’s theory. What makes the theory unique is that he states every story about a hero has a cycle. A hero must pass through 17 stages in the cycle to make him fully develop. Because of that, the researcher is interested in proving his statement and needs to research the topic with two statements of the problem: (1) How does the hero struggle in the cycle to fulfill his quest? (2) How is Joseph Campbell’s hero cycle described in Onward film? This research used qualitative and structuralism methods with hero’s journey approach by Joseph Campbell. The main theory used in this research was the hero’s journey from Joseph Campbell (1949) and definitions from Sani (1997), Seger (1987), and Natov (2018) as supporting theories. Based on the analyzed data of the first problem, three scenes showed Ian's fears or trauma. There were also 17 scenes of conflict or a struggle found in the Onward film. For the second problem, most stages could be found and described in Onward film, but several stages could not be found. They were no refusal of the return, the magic flight, rescue from without, and the crossing of the return threshold. From the findings, it can be concluded that in Onward film, all of the hero's struggles can be identified in the film. Besides, Campbell states that every hero story has a pattern of 17 stages, which is not always true. Onward film only has 13 stages. The reason is that some conditions cannot be met.
