Abstract

Communication appears in the form of conversation, even as within the conversation itself there must be ideas, opinions, information, and feelings. However, sometimes there are miscommunication and awkwardness occur in the communication. The awkwardness happens because one of the speakers commits a violation. However, this research discussed violation of conversational maxims and the functions of violating the maxims. The objectives of this research were (1) to analyze the type of the conversational maxims that are violated by Ellen and Sofia Vergara in The Ellen DeGeneres Show, (2) to analyze the functions of violation the maxims in Sofia Vergara’s utterances in The Ellen DeGeneres Show. This research used the descriptive qualitative method, and Grice's (1989) theory of cooperative principle. The results of this research showed that there were 45 utterances that violated the conversational maxim of quantity (22 data), maxim of quality (5 data), maxim of relation (9 data), maxim of manner (6 data), maxim of quantity-quality (1 data), maxim of manner- quality (1 data), and maxim of manner-quantity (1 data). The functions of the violation of conversational maxim include clarifying information, bringing up conversational implicatures, hiding the intention, creating humor, the ice-breaking, mocking, covering shame, and making obscure information. From the findings, the result of the research can be concluded that Sofia Vergara violated the maxim of quantity in every utterances because she consistently provided too much information or information that was not required by Ellen. Besides, Sofia's utterances had a function to bring up the conversational implicature because she was a humorous and talkative; she frequently brought up conversational implication such as thanking, stating, boasting and complaining in order to make the audience laugh and make the program more interesting.
