Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the kinds of verbal taboos and the meaning given to verbal taboos in “Pansy Division’s song lyrics”. This study is a part of the linguistic which is more focusing on semantic. The semantic is used to meaning about taboo language. Taboo or taboo language is a strong social prohibition against words, objects, actions, or people who are considered undesirable by a group, culture, or society. This study had used qualitative method by which the categorizes, describes, and analyzes the data systematically; factually, accurately approach the theories to solve the problem presented in the research question. In analyzing the data, this study follows four steps: (1) organizing the data. It means that the writer arranged the words which are assumed to taboo word; (2) identifying the data. In the step, the writer identifies the taboo words and then the writer identifies which one of the data belongs to word taboo language; (3) categorizing the data. After identified the data, the writer categorized words based on types; (4) interpreting the data. The writer interprets all the data based on theories and categorize and the data were analyzing based on James Cook’s theories about the taboo language in Pansy Division’s song lyrics. The result of this research shows the taboo words in Pansy Division’s song lyrics, including the kinds of verbal taboo: taboo of fear, taboo of delicacy, taboo of propriety. Meanwhile the meaning understood by the writer for the taboo words: asshole, fuck, and death is resulted as follows the word fuck considered taboo word because meaning rude and insulting also related to sexual activity, the word asshole its mean stupid and ignorant and show to insult the person, the word death it means scary to hear and included taboo word.
