Abstract
Some of the problems faced by many students in learning speaking are that the way the teacher teaches only uses whiteboard and a marker, the students just write and repeat, and they are not effectively stimulated to speak English. This research focuses on the improvement of students’ speaking skill by using retelling movie story as a learning media. This research uses the pre-experimental method of the quantitative approach with one-group pretest and posttest design. The population of this research are the eleventh grade of SMA Karya Budi Bandung. The researcher applies purposive sampling taken from class the eleventh grade of the social science program consisting of 25 students to be the sample in the experimental group. This research was held in 6 meetings involved one pretest, four treatments, and one posttest. The pretest was given to see basic skill of students in speaking and the posttest was given to find out the students’ improvement in speaking skill after given the treatment in four meetings, and the researcher used movie as a media as a learning method in teaching speaking skill. In analyzing the data, the researcher use analytical statistics SPSS version 25 and t-test. The result of this research shows that there were significant improvements on the students’ speaking skill after the treatments by using retelling movie story. In pretest result, after analyzing the collected data, it is shown that the mean score of students’ speaking skill before using retelling movie stories was 5.52, which means in the low category. Moreover, the posttest result after using retelling movie story shows the mean score was 9.48 which means high category. In addition, the score of t-test which is 9.127 is the higher than t-table which is 2.169. It means that retelling movie story activities gives significant improvement to students’ speaking skill. Based on the data, it can be concluded that retelling movie story is effective for teaching speaking to the eleventh grade students of SMA Karya Budi Bandung. It is suggest the English teachers use retelling movie story as a teaching technique to improve students’ speaking skills.
