Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of flouting maxim found in 21 Jump Street Movie and how flouting maxim can create humour. The researcher uses Grice’s theory of maxim (1975) to explain the types of flouting maxim and the theory of humour by Attardo (1994) to explain the kinds of humour created from flouting maxim. The researcher uses qualitative-descriptive method to answer the research questions. The data obtained from conversation in 21 Jump Street movie. The finding shows following results: 7 flouting maxim of quantity, 17 flouting maxim of quality, 6 flouting maxim of relation, and 4 flouting maxim of manner. Meanwhile, the results of humour that are created from flouting maxim are 5 hostility found, 1 in the flouting maxim of quantity, 3 in the flouting maxim of quality, and 1 in the flouting maxim of relation. The 28 data found included in the incongruity, 6 in the flouting maxim of quantity, 13 in the flouting maxim of quality, 5 in the flouting maxim of relation, and 4 in the flouting maxim of manner. Lastly, there was 1 data found included in the release, in the flouting maxim of quality. It can be concluded that the dominant type of flouting maxim is the flouting maxim of quality with 17 data. The researcher also concluded that the dominant type of humour in 21 Jump Street movie is incongruity with 28 data.
