Abstract

Stand-up comedy is one of the forms of modern comedy. The comic, who is often a lone individual, occasionally speaks to groups of people in a roasting fashion using language as the means of communication, although this is not always the case. The structure that makes up humor, which may be brought about through pragmatism. Thereby, one might observe to explore the applications of politeness method, especially the negative one. The research aimed to seek purpose in finding form of negative politeness strategy, factors of negative politeness strategy, and the process of factor negative politeness strategy influence Trevor Noah in using the negative politeness strategy as comedy on stand-up comedy Atlanta 2016. This study employed the qualitative descriptive to examine and explain the type of negative politeness strategy, factor, and type of negative politeness strategy influence on the comedy in the show of Trevor Noah Afraid of The Dark in Atlanta 2016. The theories which deployed in this study is about politeness strategy in the form negative politeness strategy, which promoted by Brown and Levinson to identify the types of negative politeness strategy, followed with its factor. The second was deployed from Ramon Papana in dividing structural build of standup comedy technique as its element. The study's findings showed that Trevor Noah actively employed impersonal humor to a dominating degree in his jokes. The second finding showed that the impact of social context on the jokes was also significant, indicating that the speaker purposefully exploited a social issue as the joke's topic. The outcome demonstrated that the negative politeness method, which is often oblique, questioning hedging, and impersonalizing the speaker and hearer, was used to set up humor. The negative politeness tactic of the type pessimistic, questioning hedging, and impersonalizing the speaker and hearer had an impact on the punchline. Callback was created using a poor kind of civility, such as showing reverence and apologizing.
