Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and reading achievement of EFL students. So, this study was structured to achieve three objectives: 1) To determine the effect of emotional intelligence in learning. 2) to determine students' reading skills in learning, and 3) to determine whether there is a correlation between emotional intelligence and students' reading achievement. The method used in this research is quantitative research through correlational research design. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires and tests. The scores of the two instruments were calculated and analyzed to determine if there was no relationship between the two variables. This research was conducted at SMA KP 3 Paseh. The population of this study was grade 10 SMA KP 3 Paseh as many as 141 students. However, only 30 students were selected as samples using random sampling. The results showed that correlation of EFL students' emotional intelligence and their reading achievement. It is evidenced by the results of statistical data of 3.49 with sufficient category, which indicates the influence of emotional intelligence in learning. Then, from the data that can be used to answer the second problem formulation 67 with categories, it can be interpreted that students' understanding of reading skills can be categorized as sufficient. Third, from the data, emotional intelligence correlates with students' reading achievement with a correlation coefficient of 0.397 with a significance level of 5%. Thus, it can be stated that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, meaning that there is a significant relationship between variable X and variable Y and has an effect of 8%. In conclusion, there is a correlation between EFL Students' emotional intelligenge and their reading achievement. Moreover, it is recommended for teachers to know the students' learning styles that can be used to determine the suitable method, especially for students reading comprehension.
