Abstract

Symbol is literary elements used in literature to help readers understand a literary work. It is the use of an object to represent something more than what its literal meaning. This research aims at finding 1) the darkness symbols portrayed in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel; and 2) readers’ interpretations toward the darkness symbol in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel by using Beach’s theory; reader response. Qualitative research and descriptive method are applied in this research to make the data widely described. There are two data resource taken by the researcher, the primary data taken from Frankenstein novel by Mary Shelley through reading process. Meanwhile, the secondary data are the result of questionnaire from 15 respondents; students of English Literature E class of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati, academic year 2013. The finding showed that in Frankenstein novel there are 20 words and phrases included into the darkness symbol. Besides, from the result of questionnaire, the respondents almost have similar understanding toward the darkness symbol. Furthermore, the result of questionnaire showed that the respondents have same problem in interpreting appropriate words and phrases and also they have different interpretation in understanding the darkness symbol.
