Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the kinds of illocutionary acts employed by the characters in the film Alice in Wonderland and to reveal the functions and the meanings of those illocutionary acts are employed by the main characters. This research used descriptive qualitative method, according to Cresswell. The data of the research were taken from the script of the dialogue containing directives utterances in the movie entitled Alice in Wonderland. The findings of the research show that the kind of utterances in this movie have not her intention from the speaker. It is the meaning of illocution acts. Overall from the whole data which is analyzed, the expressives are the most classification of illocutionary act. There are 9 assertives, 10 directives, 2 commissives and 9 expressives. Whereas, another findings are of the function of illocutionary act there are; 6 competitives, 8 convivials, 10 collaboratives and 1 conflictive. It means that in Alice’s utterance use, collaboratives are the most used.
