Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the romance formula in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018), which the main focus is on the development resolution of the love relationship between the two main characters. The purposes of this research are; (1) to find out the forms of the romance formula in To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2) to analyze the conflict in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before which shows a formula romance. The researcher uses the theory of Joyce G. Saricks to analyze romance formula and define conflicts. The research uses qualitative descriptive methods. The result of this research is 6 romance formulas. Firstly, there are tone/mood that makes the audience feel enjoying the romantic story, also feel sad and tense because of the conflicts the story. Second, the two main characters namely Lara Jean as heroin and Peter Kavinsky as hero. Third, the storyline begins with Kitty stealing Lara Jean's love letter box and making Lara Jean's love story come true with Peter Kavinsky. Fourth, the frame/setting takes place in a big city, dating in a café, and home. Fifth, pacing in romance happens quickly while still focusing on the romantic story. Sixth is style/language used are romantic words that express admiration for someone. The conflict that supports the romance formula divide in two types, namely internal conflict that comes from Lara Jean, because she does not dare to express her feelings towards the man she loves. External conflict comes from a third person, namely Gen who tries to reclaim Peter from Lara Jean and Josh who defends Lara Jean. Thus, the romance formula in To All the Boys I've Loved Before is influenced by 6 romance formulas supported by conflict, so that the two main characters find a solution and maintain their love story to have a happy ending.
