Abstract

Social deixis is an expression that distinguishes and indicates a referent's position on a social status scale as well as intimacy with the speaker. Social deixis is also closely related to context depending on who was saying, when and where the utterance was spoken. While movie is an audio-visual media that tries to convey a message to its target audience, occasionally the audience has difficulties comprehending certain expressions due to their uncertain referents and meanings. Accordingly, it is essential to do study on this topic using the following research questions: 1. What kinds of social deixis are found in the Maleficent movie? 2. What are the functions of social deixis expressions in the Maleficent movie? The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative using the main theories of Stephen C. Levinson (1983) and Alan Cruse (2006) to describe the social deixis. The findings showed 30 data in the Maleficent movie. The findings showed 30 data in the Maleficent movie. There were relational social deixis categorized into the speaker and bystander relational social deixis, the speaker and addressee relational social deixis, the speaker and addressee relational social deixis, and absolute social deixis categorized into the authorized recipient absolute social deixis. Meanwhile the functions were as politeness, as social status differentiation, as social identity, and as clarify closeness. In conclusions, the meaning of a phrase, in which the referent could move or change, depended on who was saying, when, and where the utterance was spoken. In other words the meaning was based on the communication context.
