Abstract

English vocabulary is an essential aspect of English language skills. On the other hand, vocabulary learning is recognized as one of the most challenging problems for language learners. One alternative that can help students learn vocabulary easily is mobile-assisted language learning. In this study, the Cake application was used as a supporting medium for learning English vocabulary. This study aims to determine the process of using Cake applications, the students' results of using Cake applications, and students' perceptions of Cake applications in mastering English vocabulary. The research used a qualitative case study technique. This research included 36 students of eleventh graders from SMA Negeri 1 Cikampek in 2022. This study used observations, tests, interviews, and questionnaires to gather data. First, the observations described learning with the Cake app. Then, the vocabulary test showed the pupils' English vocabulary knowledge. Then, questionnaires were utilized to examine students' perception of Cake for learning English vocabulary. Last, the interviews were used to explore in-depth information about students' perspectives of the Cake app for learning English vocabulary. There are three main findings from this study. First, the use of Cake is done through eight steps; (1) The teacher prepared applications and materials, (2) the teacher provided a warm-up for students, (3) the teacher shared the video link from the Cake app, (4) the students accessed the Cake app, (5) students practiced the vocabulary obtained from the video, (6) the students took the quiz provided on each vocabulary topic, (7) students reviewed the words they have learned, (8) students practiced the vocabulary they have learned in the material. Second, the vocabulary test results have proven that the students mastered the English vocabulary they learned from the Cake application. Third, based on questionnaires and interviews, most students responded positively to the use of Cake in learning English vocabulary. Students claimed that Cake is an application that is easy to use, practical, and helps them learn vocabulary. In addition, students also considered Cake as a suitable application for learning vocabulary. In conclusion, the learning process with Cake went well according to the stages, and the students responded positively to using Cake in learning English vocabulary. In addition, the suggestion from this research for further research is to investigate the variables with different approaches.
