Abstract
This research investigated EFL students’ process and volume of ideas using collaborative activity to generate ideas. This research was conducted due to students’ difficulties in writing especially in generating ideas. The purposes of the research were to identify the process of generating ideas through collaborative activity and to analyze the volume of ideas generated by students using collaborative activity. This research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. It involved 30 students from VIII J graders of MTs N 1 Pangandaran. The researcher uses a purposive sampling technique to choose the participants for this research. The data was obtained from observation in 3 meetings and document analysis. The result of this research; 1) the overall process of generating ideas using collaborative activity in this study runs well. Every stage of the collaborative activity process from meeting 1 to meeting 3 was implemented in accordance with observation rubric and the students collected the worksheet at the end of process. 2) The whole results of the second part resulted in many ideas listed in 22 worksheets from 9 groups. From the worksheet of the first meeting to the last meeting it can be concluded that collaborative activity can improve idea productivity. Besides, the ideas generated between one group and another were varied and different. Moreover, the ideas generated in each meeting increased and decreased. This research offers recommendations for students, teachers, and future researchers. For students, students should be more active in teamwork and participate in teams. For teachers, teachers have to get used to teaching students routinely in generating more ideas with collaborative activities. For future researcher, the results of this study can be used as a reference in conducting research in the same field.
