Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between the intensity in interacting with social media and the reading comprehension of EFL students. This study is aimed: 1) to identify EFL students’ intensity of using social media. 2) to identify students' reading comprehension skill, and 3) to examine whether there is a correlation between students’ intensity in interacting with social media and their reading comprehension skill. The research used a quantitative research approach with correlational design. The researcher used questionnaire and document analysis in collecting the data. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of students’ intensity in interacting with social media, while document analysis using reading courses score was used to collect the data of students’ reading comprehension skills. The population of this research was the fourth semester students of English Education Department at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The sample of this research consisted of 40 students and the sampling method used was random sampling. The researcher used Pearson's correlation product-moment to analyze the data using SPSS 25 version. The study reveals that the correlation between students' intensity in interacting with social media is a positive correlation. It showed that the correlation value r = 0.197 with the correlation coefficient range 0.00 - 0.20 categorized as a positive correlation with very low correlation. Moreover, to measure the strength of correlation, the Sig. value (0.224) is compared with the level of significance α (0.05) with 40 samples. Since Sig. value (0.224) is bigger than the level of significant (0.05). It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted. In other words, even though the correlation coefficient shows low and positive correlation, but it is not statistically proven that there is correlation between two variables. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is no significant correlation between students’ intensity in interacting with social media and their reading comprehension skill.
