Abstract

Motivational dynamics in speaking is the fluctuation of motivational change over time during speaking. Motivational dynamics in speaking are often found in the classroom while doing speaking activities, one of the activity is a small group discussion. For these reasons, the first aim of this research is to identify EFL students' patterns of motivational dynamics during a small group discussion in a natural classroom setting. The second aim is to investigate factors were affected students’ ongoing motivational dynamics during the discussion. Qualitative method with a case study design was adopted to gather a broad range of data, containing the students’ ratings of their motivation in speaking time-to-time, their written interpretations of the ratings, and interviews. This research sampled the 9th grade students of MTsN 2 Garut, which consisted of 27 students. The data were collected through Motometer and interview. Motometer was accomplished to capture the change in motivation. Furthermore, interviews were conducted to deeply understand the factors that affect students’ motivational dynamics in speaking. This research used Creswell (2012) steps to analyze the qualitative data. The findings of this research showed that motivational change patterns among students are vary. Students experienced fluctuations in their motivation to speak during a small group discussion, suggesting that motivation in speaking is dynamic even in the concise term. Furthermore, this research revealed that students utilize factors that affect their motivational change in speaking during the discussion. This research suggests that the teacher could identify students' ongoing speaking motivation from time to time and the factors causing it in order to establish a conducive atmosphere in the classroom and maintain students' desire to speak throughout speaking activities.
