Abstract

The Use of Communicative Activities to Improve Students’ Speaking Skills (A Quasi Experimental Study at the Ninth Grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Bandung). Speaking is one of important skills for students to understand and participate in English language teaching learning process. In order to make students able to speak English in language class activities a teacher should know and apply a suitable method and technique to teach speaking. Communicative activities refer to the classroom activities that provide a genuine information gap and make it possible for language learners to communicate with target language in communicative language teaching approach. Communicative language teaching focuses on communicative activities which aim to encourage learners to speak and listen to others learners in the classroom setting. The teacher provide opportunities for learners to speak while the learners will have a desire to communicate in real situation. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to find out (1) students’ speaking skill before being taught by communicative activities, (2) students’ speaking skill after being taught by communicative activities, (3) the significant improvement of communicative activities on students’ speaking skill at the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Bandung. This research used quantitative approach with quasi experimental study method. The quasi experimental methods consists of pretest, four-time treatments and posttest. A total number of population is 130 students of grade ninth of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Bandung and the sample taken is 36 students. The sample is taught by using communicative activities. To collect the data, a pretest and a posttest were conducted orally. The test aimed to find out the use of communicative activities on students’ speaking skill. The data is analyzed by using statistical procedures. The result showed the mean score of pretest is 29.05 and the posttest is 38.16. It means that students’ speaking is increasing because of the use of communicative activities applied by the teacher. The statistical research showed that tcount 14.4 >ttable 2.73, which means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It says that the hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It says the students’ speaking skill is lower before being given treatments. Based on the finding above, teaching speaking English by using communicative activities could improve students’ speaking skills at the ninth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Bandung. Therefore, this research recommends communicative activities as a teaching speaking technique in a classroom. In addition, this research can add references or ideas for the next research which is conducted similar discussion in teaching speaking.
