Abstract
The English Week Program (EWP) has been widely applied in many schools, known as the English Day Program (EDP). The EWP is commonly implanted in modern Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia as another strategy to help students' speaking skills development. The research was designed to discover the role of the English Week Program in students' speaking skill development. Specifically, this research purposed: to explore the implementation of the English Week Program in students’ speaking development, the teacher's challenges in implementing the English Week Program, and the student's perception about the role of the English Week Program in students' speaking skills development. This research is a case study that uses a qualitative approach. The participants in this study were 20 students of class XI and one teacher of Al-Mu'awanah modern Islamic boarding school, Majalaya, Bandung Regency. The sample was selected by purposive sampling. Data were obtained from questionnaires, interviews, and observation. Data analysis is presented by describing the results of the questionnaire responses, interview transcriptions, and observation documentation. The study result shows that the EWP is implemented through several stages: the planning stage, the organizing stage, and the implementing stage. The teacher faces some challenges during the program that some teachers mismatch their educational backgrounds. Furthermore, the teachers and staff have limited English ability and speaking insecurity. The teacher also finds improving students' pronunciation and grammar skills difficult. Moreover, the CLI and students lack motivation. In addition, the student's perceptions about the EWP that they argue getting English cognitive improvement after the EWP because they are enthusiastic and enjoy learning English. They get high motivation and expectations to improve their speaking skill while participating the EWP. However, the students’ situation and environment have a bad influence on improving the students' speaking skills. The EWP has an essential role in students' speaking skill development. Building motivation and self-confidence need to be carried out by all parties in this program to create an effective English language environment during the EWP program. The EWP enhance students’ speaking skill, especially in vocabulary mastery and speaking comprehension. However, it still needs some improvement in students' grammar, pronunciation, and fluency. In addition, the program influenced students' motivation to speak English.
