Abstract
This research aims to analyze the types of directive illocutionary acts in Once Upon an Eid; Stories of Hope and Joy (2020) based on the theory put forward by John R. Searle regarding the types of directive illocutionary speech acts as well as the function of the directive illocutionary act based on Geoffrey Leech's theory. The objectives of this research include identifying the types of directive illocutionary acts found in Once Upon an Eid; Stories of Hope and Joy (2020) and exploring the function of illocutionary speech acts in Once Upon an Eid; Stories of Hope and Joy. Qualitative methods were employed to conduct the research in this study. Qualitative research methods are data-related methods that are used to explain the approach, data types, data collection techniques, and data analysis processes. There are various types and functions founded based on the data obtained and examined in Once Upon an Eid; Stories of Hope and Joy (2020), utilizing John R. Searle's theory and Geoffrey Leech's theory of the types and functions of directive illocutionary acts, respectively. The types are as follows: asking, demanding, forbidding, proposing, and inviting. In terms of functions, Once Upon an Eid; Stories of Hope and Joy has the conflictive function, the collaborative function, the competitive function, and the convivial function. Based on the descriptions conducted by researchers regarding "Directive Illocutionary Speech Act in Once Upon an Eid; Stories of Hope and Joy" using the two theories proposed by John R. Searle and Geoffrey Leech, it can be concluded that in Once Upon an Eid; Stories of Hope and Joy, there are some utterances in the form of a command, restriction, request, invitation, or suggestion that can be used to determine the type of speech as well as the function.
