Abstract

As a kind of communication, speaking is described as the human ability to produce sound or voice orally and communicate or convey feelings and thoughts to others. Interpreting is a verbal activity that may be combined with speaking because it needs students to perform a spoken translation. The topic of speaking ability was selected since many students struggle to strengthen their English-speaking ability. This study examined the speaking ability of 2019's Interpreting Indonesian-English elective course students and their perceptions of their speaking ability in online Simultaneous Interpreting (SI) Indonesian-English practices. A case study is selected to collect data. The data is collected by questionnaire, interview, and document analysis. Using questionnaires and in-depth interviews, this study explored the students' perceptions of their online Indonesian-English Simultaneous Interpreting (SI) practices. In selecting participants, purposive sampling is employed. The overall number of questionnaire participants is forty-eight, and five of them were selected for interview and document analysis. The results indicate that Simultaneous Interpreting (SI) Indonesian-English practices contribute to the improvement of students' speaking skills. This is compatible with their speaking ability results in Simultaneous Interpreting (SI) Indonesian-English practices, which indicate that two of five students have an average level of speaking ability, while the remaining three have a good level. By conducting this research, students may go deeper and determine their true skill level in simultaneous Indonesian-English interpreting procedures, since the result of the assessment from the document analysis was given to the students. Additionally, lecturers are expected to be able to adopt simultaneous interpreting practices as an effective approach for teaching speaking to develop the students’ speaking ability.
