Abstract

Conversational implicatures are implicatures that occur because of the existence of another meaning or code in a conversation that has a certain purpose in which it is not necessarily understood by the interlocutor. In this research, the researcher discusses conversational implicature using slang language where this can cause the conversation not to run smoothly due to the presence of other meanings from the words spoken by the characters in the movie, such as the presence of implicit meaning. In this research there are three questions: 1) What are the types of conversational implicature using slang in the Mean Girls movie 2004? 2) What are the functions of conversational implicature in the Mean Girls movie 2004? and 3) What maxim are flouted in Mean Girls movie 2004? This research uses qualitative method to analyze the data. The object of this research use the descriptive method to describe the data from the movie. That contained types of implicature, functions of implicature, and flouting maxim based on Grice (1975), and Searle's (1975) theories. The results of this research show that there are 57 utterances of Mean Girls movie 2004 character utterances, there were 22 data of particularized implicatures and 35 data of generalized conversational implicatures, based on the result of the functions there are 10 data in three types of function, there are six data of assertive/representative, three data of directive, and one data of commissive. and the result of flouting maxim there were seven data. there are two data of flouting maxim of quality, one data of flouting maxim of quantity, two data of flouting maxim of relevance, and one data of flouting maxim of manner.
