Abstract

In this paper the writer tries to investigate students’ reading comprehension ability by using cloze technique. The writer begins with the observation at the third grade SMPN 2 Cipongkor about reading comprehension, the student’s having difficulty in reading comprehension. Thus the writer giving an alternative cloze technique to improve students’ reading comprehension ability. The purpose of this research is to identify the students’ reading comprehension ability by using cloze technique, to find out the students’ reading comprehension by using reading method and to analyze the significant between students’ reading comprehension by using cloze technique and reading method. The method used in the research was experimental method. The experiment was divided into two classes they were experimental class (teaching by using cloze technique) and control class (teaching by reading method). To conduct the study, 70 students were selecting randomly by the writer. The data were collected through multiple choice cloze as many as 35 questions. The research findings show that: 1) The mean score of experimental class is 81.2 and the mean score of control class is 76.8. Therefore, the mean score of experimental class is higher than the mean score of control class. 2) The mean score of control class is 76.8 and experimental class is 81.2. Therefore, the mean score of control class is lower than the mean score of experimental class. 3) The result of data analysis shows that tcount is 2.06 while ttable is 1.67. It means that tcount is higher than ttable. Moreover, the null hypothesis (HO) is rejected and working hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Since tcoun is higher than ttable. It is proved that the cloze technique effective for improving students’ reading comprehension ability. Moreover, teaching reading comprehension by using cloze technique is good in improving students’ reading comprehension ability.
