Abstract

Pronunciation is still neglected by English teachers and students in the majority of language classroom because of some factors such as mother tongue, motivation, and the lack of knowledge about pronunciation itself. Therefore, this study tries to find the alternative way to face that problem by using News Casting Activity to improve students’ pronunciation. Newscasting activity involves the students to read a text in front of the class like the real newscaster and it should make the students feel like the real newscaster. Repeat after me activity involves the students to repeat the word after the teacher said. Thus, it should be enjoyable and interesting in teaching learning. The objective of this research is to find out (1) Students’ pronunciation by using Newscasting Activity, (2) Students’ pronunciation by using Repeat After Me Activity, (3) a significant difference between the students’ achievement on pronunciation by using newscasting activity and repeat after me activity. The subject of this research is the tenth grade of MA Putri PUI Talaga Majalengka in academic year 2017/2018 at class X MIA which consists of 34 students as an Experimental Class and X-IIS 1 which consist of 40 students as a Control Class. The Method used in this research is a quantitative method, notably a quasi-experimental design with used two group pre-test and post-test. The Data collection used the oral test in pre-test and post-test, and they were processed by statistical analysis. The conclusion is that News Casting Activity can improve students’ pronunciation. The process of statistical analysis comes from the result of pre-test and post-test then started from testing the normality, testing the homogeneity, testing hypothesis, and the index N-Gain calculating. Here is the result of statistical analysis, both of the data are normal and homogeneous, the result of the hypothesis is the post-test mean in the experimental class (74,5) is greater than the control class (69). The t-test result shows that the obtained value of tcount is 3.26 and ttable with significance level 5% is 1.99. it indicates that tcount (3.26) > ttable (1.99). It means that tcount is greater than ttable. Thus, it proves that research hypothesis (Ha) is accepted to mean there is the significance of students’ pronunciation by using News Casting Activity and Repeat After Me Activity. The further result shows that the N-gain calculation in experimental class 0.35 is greater than control class 0.24. Which means that using newscasting activity is better activity than repeat after me activity.
