Abstract
ENGLISH : Understanding pragmatics and speech acts can help us comprehend the utterances better. Misinterpretation is possible in everyday communication, which is why we must learn speech acts to avoid misunderstandings in a conversation. The researcher wants to analyze the types and function of directive speech acts that often appears in The Society TV Series episode 2 and 3. The researcher used qualitative research as the method and descriptive analysis approach in order to analyze this research. The researcher used Searle’s (1969) theory to answer the first problem and Yule’s (2010) theory to answer the second problem. The researcher got the data from the transcript of the TV series. The result of this research showed that there are 53 data of directive speech act types found in the series. There are command (11 data), request (11 data), prohibition (6 data), permission (3 data), and question (22 data). There are 59 data of directive speech act function found in the series. There are commanding (11 data), requesting (11 data), questioning (22 data), and informing (15 data). Directive speech act types and function that are mostly used is question while permission is the least used. Command and request both have the same amount used by the characters in The Society episode 2 and 3. The researcher hopes that this research will be useful to readers who would like to learn more about pragmatics, especially directive speech acts and will conduct similar research with the same discussion using different other objects and other experts.
