Abstract
The objective of reading is understanding. Comprehension is the reader's ability to connect their prior knowledge and understanding of the material. EFL students in high school should be able to understand the meaning of various text types, including recount, descriptive, and narrative, in both written and oral forms. As a teaching method Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is an effective method of instruction for fostering students' reading comprehension. This study is aimed to identify the significance improvement before and after of using collaborative strategic reading. In this study, the quantitative method is used. A pre-experimental study is selected as the research design, the data were collected by pre-test and post-test with 31 eleventh-grade students MAN 1 Majalengka serving as participants. The finding of this research indicates that there is significant improvement after using collaborative strategic reading, the mean score of pre-test is 62.58 is classified as “Fair” category and the mean score of pos-test is 78.87 is classified as “good” category. it indicates improve 16.35 point on the students’ average score and it increase from “fair” category to “good” category. To sum up, the use of collaborative strategic reading can improve student’ reading comprehension especially in descriptive text.
