Abstract

ENGLISH : The purpose of this study is to decipher the connotative meanings in Stevie Wonder's song lyrics in the album “Songs in the Key of Life”. The songs were very successful and significantly impacted a great deal of contemporary music. There are two questions in this research: 1) What type of connotative meaning is implied in Stevie Wonder’s songs? 2) What is the meaning of the connotative words contained in Stevie Wonder’s songs? The qualitative method was applied to analyze the data meanwhile the descriptive method was used to describe the object of the data. The grand theory that is used in this research is the connotative meaning of Leech (1981) and J.N. Hook (1976) as the supporting theory. The types of connotative meanings are divided into three categories: positive, negative, and neutral connotation. The result of this research is the majority of words and phrases have the form of positive connotative meaning with 21 data found. There are 20 words and phrases that have a negative connotation. Then, a total of 19 words and phrases have connotations that are not positive or negative (neutral). The findings of this research are intended to provide explanations about the application of positive, negative, and neutral connotative meanings.
