Abstract

This study examines the existence of women from the main character in the novel The Queen’s Gambit using the qualitative descriptive method with feminist theory by Simone de Beauvoir. This study aims to identify the main character’s portrayal and analyze the woman’s existence in the novel The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis. The data used is documentation using note-taking techniques and content analysis. The results of this study: (1) The main character shows her efforts in winning various chess tournaments which men dominate (2) The main character wants to get equal treatment in the field of chess by showing her abilities in chess tournaments from various countries and becoming a world champion. (3) The main character makes herself one of the women in America who does not only stay at home and becomes a student but she shows her existence to others by becoming a chess athlete. (4) The main character is included in intellectual figures because she can carry out thinking activities, express opinions, have a career, and others. (5) The main character proves that she deserves to be recognized by society. The more she participated in chess tournaments and wins them, the more she was recognized and considered part of society.
