Abstract

One of the most popular fiction genre is romance. Every popular literature work has its own archetype or formula that indicates its own special characteristics. The most of romance reader is woman. In regarding to this, Janice Radway has ever researched woman ideal romance. So that this research is aimed to exemine ideal romance formula which is explained by Janice Radway in Christina Dodd’s Candle in the Window by indentifying Radway’s thirteen function in narrative structure of Dodd’s Candle in the Widow. Due to this, two problems were proposed: 1). What are the thirteen functions of Janice Radway’s ideal romance formula which constructed in Candle in the Window novel? 2). What are the repesentations of ideal romance formula in Dodd’s Candle in the Window? To answer these questions the researcher used Janice Radway’s ideal romance formula theory and romance genre theory to be constructed as theoretical underpinnings and genre or structuralism approach to solve the problems. The result of the research showed that this novel contains ten functions of thirteen functions of ideal romance formula by Janice Radway. So that, Christina Dodd’s Candle in the Window could be said as an ideal romance. Besides, this ten functions also proposes representations of heroine character. These representations are influenced by the development of narrative structure which is formed by hero and heroine relationship. The representations are found in emotional expression and maturity of heroine. Heroine’s emotional expressions involves fear, rage and joy feeling, while maturity involves decision making and sexuality.
