Abstract

Translation is transferring a meaning of language known as source language (SL)into another language or target language (TL). Translation has an important role to equivalence of meaning between SL and the TL, because not all the words in source language have the equivalent words in the TL. The problems discussed in this research consists of two things. The first, to find out the translation methods used in the dubbing Spongebob squarepants animated television series. The second, to find out the most translation method appliedin the dubbing Spongebob squarepants animated television series.The main theory used in this study is proposed by Newmark (1988). This study used descriptive qualitative approach with dubbing analysis on the serial television series because the data in this study are words, sentences, and phrase, and quantitave approach is to identify the percentage what the most dominant method applied.Source data from this study is the dialogue sentences in Spongebob Squarepants animated televsion series. Having collected 327 data, the researcher analyzed, interpreted, calculated,and concluded the research data. The researcher found 327 sentences dialogue in the movie. The result show that 32 sentences dialogue that were translated by using word for word translation method, 106 sentences dialogue that were translated by using literal translation method, 4 sentences dialogue that were translated by using faithful translation method, 8 sentences dialogue that were translated by using adaptation translation method ,19 sentences dialogue that were translated by using semantic translation method, 33 sentences dialogue that were translated by using idiomatic translation method, 48 sentences dialogue that were translated by using communicative translation method, 77 sentences dialogue that were translated by using free translation.
