Abstract

Human communication identified as a rational and cooperative exchange of information. Conversation, on the other hand, may be non-cooperative. One that is fundamental to linguistic and cultural identities is felt as a paradox, even as an abusive experience. This kind of abusive human interaction can be seen in the Short Film Your Reality (2022). The Short Film Your Reality (2022) is one example of gaslighting, which is performed in unequal personal relationships and creates a climate of "surreality". In order to explain illocutionary acts in gaslighting utterances, this research uses Searle's theory. Additionally, to demonstrate how gaslighting affects victims' lives, this research also applies Sweet's sociological theory of gaslighting. This research is a type of qualitative research where the data obtained are presented in written form. This study aims to determine the types of illocutionary acts and identify the social effects of gaslighting communication used in the Short Film Your Reality (2022). In the results of this study, the researcher was able to analyze 21 data that are categorized as illocutionary: 15 data of representative and 6 data of directive. Therefore, those data are classified in the sociological theory of gaslighting, such as 17 data of power-laden, 10 data of gender inequality, and 6 data on both power-laden and gender inequality. It can be concluded that gaslighting in a close relationship can adversely affect the victim's life.
