Abstract

This study discusses two research problems, what type of psychological trauma experienced by the two main characters in the novel It Starts With Us and how the main characters build a defense mechanism as an impact of the trauma. The purpose of this study is to find out what psychological traumas were experienced by the two characters and how this trauma impacted the personality of both of them using Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic theory. The author uses a qualitative method in analyzing the novel, where the data comes from the narration and dialogue. This study found that the two characters experienced three types of childhood trauma, domestic violence and anxiety. Furthermore, of the ten defense mechanisms described by Freud (1936), the two characters use four defense mechanisms to fight their trauma.
