Abstract
This research focuses on whether the English reading materials for pharmacy students meet their needs in learning pharmaceutical terms and definitions. The study aims to answer two research questions: 1. What are the pharmaceutical students’ needs in learning English reading materials? 2. To what extent do the existing English reading materials meet the needs of pharmaceutical students? This study uses the theory of need assessment by Witkin, Altschuld, & Altschuld (1995) and document analysis by Hutchinson & Waters (1987). It involves the exploration of students' needs, data, and materials to identify gaps between what is and what should be. This case study collected the data from the questionnaire, document analysis, and interview with 36 students in 11th grade at SMK Negeri 7 Kota Bandung to investigate their reading material needs and perceptions. The data analysis reveals that students require reading material for medical prescriptions, articles, and job specifications. Current materials are based on Bahasa Inggris Kurtilas and Pharmacy Ukraine's English for Pharmacy. Assessment result shows that the existing materials are general content, but primary textbook development is needed. The teacher was implementing students' needs through resources and teaching techniques. To sum up, this research shows that the need assessment between the Existing reading materials and students’ needs is sufficient. This study is recommended for those who want to make need assessments about students’ needs and attempt to search the gap between what the materials already taught and what materials should be taught for the vocational pharmacy student.
