Abstract

This research analyzes the Romance Formula in Colleen Hoover's Novel It Ends with Us. Researchers use the Radway’s Ideal theory as the main theory and use several other supporting theories such as the Cawelti theory. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive explanation because it takes quotes from the novel through the dialogue to the narrative. The approach in answering the questions in this study uses a structuralism approach. In this research there are two sources of data, the primary data is taken from the novel It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover and the secondary data is taken from websites, books, documents and others. The technique of analyzing in this research is qualitative analysis with the descriptive. The result found is that the novel fulfills eleven of the thirteen sequences of Radway's theory. The completed sequences are the first, second, third, fourth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth. Meanwhile, the sequences that were not fulfilled were the fifth and sixth sequences. This novel also has a plot that is in accordance with the romance storyline as in Cawelti's theory. So it can be concluded that even though not all sequences are fulfilled, with eleven sequences and plots that are in accordance with romance theory this novel is included in the romance genre.
