Abstract

The comprehension of pragmatics and speech acts plays a pivotal role in enhancing our understanding of utterances. In everyday communication, the potential for misinterpretation looms large, underlining the significance of mastering speech acts to prevent misunderstandings during conversations. This research aims to meticulously analyze the types and functions of directive speech acts frequently occurring in Saving Private Ryan Movie Director by Steven Spielberg. Qualitative research methodology, with a descriptive analysis approach, was employed to investigate this subject. Searle's (1969) theory was employed to address the first research question, while Yule's (2010) theory was applied to address the second. Data was sourced from transcripts of the TV series. The findings of this study reveal 53 instances of directive speech act types in the series, with commands (11 instances), requests (11 instances), prohibitions (6 instances), permissions (3 instances), and questions (22 instances). Furthermore, 59 instances of directive speech act functions were identified, encompassing commanding (11 instances), requesting (11 instances), questioning (22 instances), and informing (15 instances). Notably, the predominant directive speech act type and function is 'question,' while 'permission' is the least utilized. 'Command' and 'request' both exhibit equal frequencies of usage among the characters in Saving Private Ryan The Movie." It is anticipated that this research will provide valuable insights for readers seeking a deeper understanding of pragmatics, specifically directive speech acts, and will encourage further research on similar topics with distinct subjects and expertise.
