Abstract
The purpose of this research was to analyze the proportion of Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in the exercises presented in the textbook entitled "Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X." This research also has the aim to find out the most frequent cognitive that appear on the textbook's exercises. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the English textbook. Specifically, this research used content analysis in gathering the data. The data was gathered by reading, identification, classification, and analysis. This study used the revised Bloom's Taxonomy (2001) framework to analyze the exercises. This research takes the data from the Chapter 1 until the Chapter 3 of the textbook. The research findings showed that the textbook exercises contained LOTS and HOTS exercises with different percentages. LOTS dominated the exercises with the percentage 73.2%, which covered 16.9% C1 (Remembering), 39.4% C2 (Understanding), and 16.9% C3 (Applying). On the other hand, the percentage of HOTS was 28.7%, which covered 16.9% C4 (Analyzing), 1.4% C5 (Evaluating), and 11.8% C6 (Creating). It can be concluded that the exercises in the English textbook entitled "Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X" published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia 2017, dominated by Lower-Order Thinking Skills.
