Abstract

Literary adaptation involves an adjustment process of narration from one literary work to another, one of which occurs from novels into films that are interesting to be studied because the experience conveyed will be different based on how the literary media presents the narration itself. This study examines the adaptation phenomenon from the novel And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie into the film And Then There Were None by Rene Clair with the formulated research question: (1) What elements are adapted from the novel and film of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None? (2) How are the differences in elements adaptation in the novel and film of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None? This research used the descriptive qualitative method and the theories of Bassnett (1993) about comparative literature, and the theories of Hutcheon (2006) about the literary adaptation process. The findings in this research are intrinsic elements that are adapted, namely plot (15 data), character & characterization (17 data), setting (15 data), and theme (one datum). This research also found adaptation processes, namely addition (six data), subtraction (five data), and modification (three data). The differences in the adapted elements in film form are related to Clair’s creativity in reinterpreting and adapting the narratology aspect from Christie’s novel form.
