Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to identify the translation techniques employed by students when translating Indonesian Islamic Studies texts into English. The study aimed to address two specific research questions: 1. What translation strategies and techniques are most commonly used by students in translating an abstract of Islamic study? 2. What are the rationales for using particular translation strategies and techniques? This research employed a theoretical framework derived from Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), Venuti (1995), and Aminuddin, et al (2020) to address the research question. This study focused on exploring the translation strategies and techniques, cultural and comprehension consideration. This study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing document analysis and interviews as the data collection techniques. This study was carried out among the students enrolled in the Translating Text on Islamic Studies (TTIS) class in the academic year 2022/2023. The research comprised 12 participants, categorized into three groups according to their TOEFL scores (high, medium, and low). Furthermore, the participants were grouped into two categories based on their educational background, with some coming from boarding schools and others from non-boarding schools. The research discovered that students within the TTIS class predominantly employed foreignization strategies. In terms of techniques, borrowing (57.4%) and literal translation (19.4%) were the primary methods utilized to translate Indonesian Islamic terminology into English, illustrating their emphasis on maintaining authenticity. Generalization (2.08%) and amplification (1.38%) were less common, used to provide broader translations and add context to enrich the meaning of Islamic concepts in English. Through the interview, the translators of Islamic terms consider various factors and often prioritize foreignization strategies to cater to specific audiences, aiming for relatability and clarity. Their decisions are influenced by the origin and meaning of the words, their audience's knowledge, and a desire to produce accurate and accessible translations. In conclusion, this research provides a comprehensive analysis of the translation practices in Islamic studies texts, specifically focusing on the translation of Islamic terms. This study emphasizes the importance of students familiarizing themselves with various aspects of Islamic studies and using diverse translation techniques with strong justifications. For teachers, the focus should be on enhancing students' understanding of Islamic studies to improve their comprehension of Islamic terminology. Future research on culture-specific translation of Islamic terms can facilitate intercultural communication and understanding among diverse linguistic and cultural communities.
