Abstract

Social deixis are deictic expressions that serve to indicate the position of the reference on a scale of social status and relative proximity to the speaker. Social deixis is usually used to provide social expressions that show close social relations and as a marker of differences in social levels between speakers and listeners or participants and other entities. The writer perceives interested in social deixis and considers researching this topic with the following research formulations: 1. What social deixis is used by the characters in the film “Spider-Man: No Way Home”? 2. What is the function of social deixis used by the characters in the movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home”?. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method and the main theory used in this research is social deixis from Levinson (1983). The results of this study indicate that there are 101 types of social deixis in this film that contain social deixis. The data consists of 66 relational social deixis data, including speaker and referent data (referent honorific) is the most dominant. In addition, there are 35 absolute social deixis data, including data of authorized recipients is the most dominant. Furthermore, the writer found 59 data about the function of social deixis, Including data of close relationships is the most dominant. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the type of deixis that is often used by each character in the film Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) is social relational deixis and the function of social deixis that is often used is closeness.
