Abstract

The teaching of speaking is a significant concern in many language programs, and teaching strategies are undeniably a factor that affects teaching outcomes. A teacher's strategy should be engaging and attract students' attention. Teaching strategies are essential because they determine the success of the teaching process. This study aims to: (1) To describe teachers' strategies used in teaching speaking using film clips, (2) To find out how teachers' challenges in teaching speaking using film clips. This research is a case study that uses a qualitative approach. The participant of this research is an English teacher who teaches the seventh-grade student in one of Junior High School in Sumedang Indonesia. The data were obtained through observation and interviews. Data analysis is presented by describing the results of observations and interview transcriptions. The results of this study show that teachers use three strategies in teaching speaking using film clips, namely discussion, role play, and drilling. Teachers have some problems in teaching speaking using film clips, namely the lack of vocabulary, understanding the objectives, and understanding the discussion. In conclusion, the students have a positive response to the teacher's strategy in teaching speaking using film clips that they can understand the material if the teacher explains in calm English. In addition, students felt happy when the teacher incorporated game aspects to make English learning fun.
