Abstract

This research aims to find out the object, representment, and interpretant of sign in The Lord of the Ring: “The Fellowship of the Ring”. This research applies semiotics theory by Charles Sander Peirce’s Triadic Model as the grand theory to answer the research problems. The object of the research is a film script. Research method used in this research is qualitative descriptive method because this research used non-numerical data, such as text. The reason for choosing the object is because the plot in the script contains useful clues as a sign. The results show the object of sign in The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring film script is the ring as the icon and index, the Ring and Middle Earth creature as a symbol while representment consists of qualisigns including Middle Earth areas and creatures, sinsign regarding character expression, and legisigns in this research are specific rules or codes. Interpretant consist of rheme about expression and character interpretation, dicent sign is related to the ring, and arguments are characters and item. Although many meanings of the signs are found, most of the signs found are related to the ring.
