Abstract

In translation, it is important to always pay attention to culture specific items in the Source Text that can be conveyed properly when transferred to the Target Text, one of which is by using Domesticatioan and Foreignization methods. Not least in translating novels, Domestication and Foreignization method can be used as an alternative way to transfer cultural elements in the source text to the target text with translation techniques. This study aims to find specific cultural items in the novel The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown which are then translated using translation techniques in the form of Domestication and Foreignization..The research uses a descriptive analysis research method because it involves words or phrases which are identified as specific cultural items in accordance with the theory put forward by Newmark in general and Espindola and Vasconcellos to be more specifically included. Then, the specific cultural items found will be analyzed and categorized how translators can translate the data taken from The Da Vinci Code Novel using the basic concepts of Domestication and Foreignization which are divided into 18 translation techniques In the more specific techniques terms of domestication that used to translate the sepcific items,, there are 5 data of generalization, 4 substitution, 1 omission, 6 exoticism, 3 situational equivalence, 1 transposition, 6 adaptation, 5 modulation and 2 equivalence,. Moreover, there are total 26 data from foreignization translation techniques that appeared as 1 retention, 2 explicitation, 2 addition, 3 direct translation, 8 transcript of the original, 3 expansion, 4 borrowing, 1 calque and 2 literal translation that found as the techniques that used by the translator to translate the culture specific items that found in the Da Vinci Code novel.
