Abstract

Children’s utterances are interesting to study. It has characteristics that are different from adult. Sometimes when a child asks something, it does not mean that the child is asking, but it could be that the meaning is requesting something. In this case, people have various interpretations when capturing someone's speech. Therefore, context plays important role in the interpretation of a speech. This thesis aims to discover the types and functions of illocutionary acts used by a child in The Sea Beast movie 2022. It used a descriptive qualitative method to describe the data dialogue and acts. Based on the analysis the researcher found declarative, assertive, expressive, directive and commissive as illocutionary acts proposed by Searle. Furthermore, it is found the act function to change the world via utterance, to express what the speaker knows and thinks, to express psychological states, to express what the speaker wants and to commit the speaker to future action. The directive illocutionary act and the act function of asking are more commonly found in a child’s utterances. It described the characteristics of children’s language that give impact to the children’s utterances. They use linguistic forms that are different from what is used by adults as a form of politeness, such as on the verb, “please”, “can you”, “thank you”, “I’m sorry”, and “how do we know?”.
