Abstract

In an EFL class, especially at the junior high school level, the teacher faces various disruptive behaviors from students. This study aims to find out the types of students' disruptive behavior and teacher's classroom management strategies to deal with students' disruptive behavior in EFL classrooms. A qualitative case study design was used in this study. Data were obtained from observations and interviews to explore the types of student disruptive behavior and teachers' classroom management strategies in dealing with disruptive behavior in EFL classrooms. The case involved one EFL teacher. The study was conducted in one junior high school in Bandung, Indonesia. The results of this study show that teacher faces several types of disruptive behavior in an EFL class; students are sleepy, chatting, not paying attention to the teacher, throwing things, hitting friends, singing, laughing, walking around the class, daydreaming, and cheating. Therefore, there are several classroom management strategies that the teacher uses to deal with students' disruptive behavior in EFL classes; teacher uses direct language, sets and organizes time limits, reprimands students, treats students with respect, walks around the class, be kind and friendly to students, reprimands students' disruptive behavior until it disappears, applies a reward and punishment system, makes a student point book that contains the rules at school, makes the class fun and interesting, gives additional assignment. It can be concluded that students can carry out disruptive behavior in EFL classes due to several causes of internal and external factors. In addition, as a teacher, you must know the right classroom management strategies to anticipate and overcome students' disruptive behavior in the EFL class.
