Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out students' command of vocabulary through the utilization of the Total Physical Response technique. The research aimed to explore whether the implementation of the Total Physical Response method led to an enhancement in students' vocabulary proficiency among seventh-grade students at MTsN 2 Garut. A quantitative method was applied in this research utilizing statistical models as the methodology for data analysis. Data collection was conducted through a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. Normality, hypothesis, and n-gain test are used as the data analysis. The chosen participants were seventh-grade students, with a sample size of 32 students. The data collection process involved the administration of pre-and post-tests to assess students' vocabulary proficiency. Both the pre-test and post-test consisted of multiple-choice questions focused on various everyday items and their functions. The pre-test was conducted before the treatment's implementation to gauge students' performance, while the post-test was conducted to assess their performance after the treatment had been applied. The findings indicated that the average score on the pre-test was 59.78, falling within the "fair" range, whereas the average post-test score was 79.22, categorized as "good." It indicates an improvement of 19.44 points on the students' mean score, and it increases from the "fair" category to the "good" category, referring to the score of n=32 with a significance level of 0.05. The hypothesis test result shows that the score of sig (2-tailed) 0.000 < 0.05 indicates that H0 of this research was rejected and Ha was accepted. It signified that students' vocabulary mastery improved after Total Physical Response as the teaching method treated the students. In conclusion, the effectiveness of the Total Physical Response approach in improving students' vocabulary proficiency at MTsN 2 Garut was established. Therefore, it is recommended that English educators consider implementing the Total Physical Response method as a strategy for teaching vocabulary to students .
