Abstract
This study uses Cawelty's theory to describe creating a romance story formula. The focus of Cawelty's approach is to assist the researcher in classifying that the object of this research can be included in popular literature. However, this research is not limited to applying Cawelty's theory but also includes other supporting theories, such as Radway's theory, to deepen the analysis of plot and character in the context of this research. Thus, this research combines various approaches to enable a more comprehensive analysis of the research objectives. The method of analysis used in this study is a qualitative descriptive approach. The data analyzed comes from the dialogue spoken by the characters in the 2019 film "After". The problem formulation in this research is divided into two: (1) How does the plot build the romance formula in the movie After? (2) How does the main character build the romance formula in the movie After? The analysis After follows the theory proposed by Radway in the book Reading The Romance. From the analyzed data, we found 13 ideal romances that build the plot romance formula in After 2019. The discussion focused on the struggle of the main characters, Hardin and Tessa, to get their love story. That's where the romance formula in this movie is found. Based on the analysis results, a lot of evidence makes After 2019 worthy of being categorized as a romance genre story.
