Abstract

Politeness maxims are linguistic rules in regulating language use observed from human communicative behaviors that influence to avoid communicative disputes or violations and maintain harmony in communication. This research focuses on the maxims of politeness that occur in Dalia Mogahed's speech as a Research Director at the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU), where she leads the organization’s pioneering research and thought leadership programs on American Muslims who speak about life in America on the TED channel on YouTube. The objective of this study is to identify the types of politeness maxims and the factors that cause politeness maxims, the theory used to analyze the data in this study is the theory of Leech (1983) and Fishman (1972). The method used in this research is qualitative method with content analysis approach. The data collection technique is in the form of recordings to obtain transcripts and appropriate videos. This study found 25 data out of 125 utterances identified based on six types of politeness maxim, including tact maxim (2 data), generosity maxim (2 data), approbation maxim (4 data), modesty maxim (9 data), agreement maxim (7 data), and sympathy maxim (1 data). Furthermore, this study found three out of four factors that caused modesty maxim, namely age factor (1 data), gender factor (1 data), and context of situation factor (23 data). Based on the data, it is found that the most common type is modesty maxim because Dalia is aware that she is part of a minority community so she is always humble when speaking, and the most common factor is situation context where there are four parts that categorize into participant context which refers to who is speaking and to whom they are speaking, settings that refers to where they are speaking, topic refers to what is being talked about, and function refers to the reason why they are speaking.
